First Annual In 2005, we were delighted to have been chosen by Ned and Gigi Batchelder to be a research site for their work with Hummingbirds. They came about 5 days a week and usually for about 45 minutes to an hour a day. We had no idea how much of an education it would be. We learned that we only had 3 varieties of hummingbirds that graced our gardens, Calliope, Rufous and the Black chinned . We also learned that the ones that come early in the spring are probably nesting, but we had very few. The majority of our birds began arriving the end of June through to the beginning of August, with our peak days being the end of July. We learned that these feisty little birds use us as a Bed and Breakfast. They come in, feed, rest and move on. Through the month of July, Ned and Gigi banded over 750 birds in our gardens. They told us that we probably have 10 – 12 times that many visiting. In celebration of our little feathered friends, Tizer Gardens are going to host a Hummingbird Festival. Our friends Ned and Gigi have promised to come and share their knowledge with our visitors. The have also promised to bring fellow researchers. They will be catching the birds and showing people how they collect the information that they share with the international database on Hummingbirds. We will have vendors, food, a little music and of course seminars on hummers and information on how to attract them to your garden. Plan to join us in the garden July 30th from 10am – 6 pm for a little hummingbird magic! Don’t forget your binoculars! We will have other bird professionals on site as well to help identify other species. Admission is only $4.00.
